General Summary:
The R&D Engineer will lead the design, development, testing, and evaluation of new and existing bullet and ammunition products for commercial, law enforcement, and military applications. This role requires a strong understanding of ballistics, propellants, materials, and manufacturing processes, as well as a passion for innovation and precision.
Details:
Principal Duties and Accountabilities (Essential Functions)
- Design and develop new bullet and ammunition products, including centerfire, muzzleloading and shotshell, from concept through production
- Conduct performance analysis and ballistic testing
- Specify materials and formulations
- Develop/refine test protocols
- Root-cause analysis and improvement of existing products
- Create/maintain engineering documentation
- Interface with suppliers/internal sourcing
- Assist in patent preparation/IP documentation
- Support quality and production teams
- Monitor industry trends and competitor products
- Collaborate with external partners (e.g. government agencies)
- Prepare technical reports for internal use
- Represent the company at trade shows and industry events
- Manage project timelines to ensure timely market delivery
Education, Skills, and Experience
- Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field
- Experience in ammunition design or firearms engineering preferred
- CAD proficiency (AutoCAD, SolidWorks)
- Familiar with SAAMI and CIP standards
- Strong analytical, communication, and documentation skills
- Experience with statistical tools (Minitab, JMP)
- Firearms and reloading experience beneficial
- Lean/Six Sigma background desirable
Work Environment
Includes live-fire range testing and occasional outdoor exposure. Hearing and eye protection provided. ESD safety shoes required for ballistic lab work.
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift, balance and maneuver up to 50 lbs
- Good hygiene and grooming required
