General Summary:

The R&D Engineer will lead the design, development, testing, and evaluation of new and existing bullet and ammunition products for commercial, law enforcement, and military applications. This role requires a strong understanding of ballistics, propellants, materials, and manufacturing processes, as well as a passion for innovation and precision.

Details:

Principal Duties and Accountabilities (Essential Functions)

  • Design and develop new bullet and ammunition products, including centerfire, muzzleloading and shotshell, from concept through production
  • Conduct performance analysis and ballistic testing
  • Specify materials and formulations
  • Develop/refine test protocols
  • Root-cause analysis and improvement of existing products
  • Create/maintain engineering documentation
  • Interface with suppliers/internal sourcing
  • Assist in patent preparation/IP documentation
  • Support quality and production teams
  • Monitor industry trends and competitor products
  • Collaborate with external partners (e.g. government agencies)
  • Prepare technical reports for internal use
  • Represent the company at trade shows and industry events
  • Manage project timelines to ensure timely market delivery

Education, Skills, and Experience

  • Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field
  • Experience in ammunition design or firearms engineering preferred
  • CAD proficiency (AutoCAD, SolidWorks)
  • Familiar with SAAMI and CIP standards
  • Strong analytical, communication, and documentation skills
  • Experience with statistical tools (Minitab, JMP)
  • Firearms and reloading experience beneficial
  • Lean/Six Sigma background desirable

Work Environment

Includes live-fire range testing and occasional outdoor exposure. Hearing and eye protection provided. ESD safety shoes required for ballistic lab work.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift, balance and maneuver up to 50 lbs
  • Good hygiene and grooming required
